Ratchet is the main protagonist of the Ratchet & Clank video game series, which began on the PlayStation 2 in the year 2002, where he was voiced by Mikey Kelley, though in all subsequent appearances James Arnold Taylor has portrayed the character. The series has been adapted into a handful of different mediums, including manga and a feature film. The character, Ratchet, is a Lombax, a race of engineers, now thought to be mostly extinct. Originally, Ratchet was a young angsty mechanic operating on the planet of Veldin, where he also grew up. Here he did not possess much wealth and lived alone, until he met a robot, Clank, who convinced Ratchet to help him defeat a corrupt capitalist businessman plotting to destroy planets for nefarious purposes, know as Chairman Alonzo Drek. Ratchet & Clank become intergalactic celebrities as a result of their heroic actions, which plays into the satirical nature that the series was known for until the characters and series were rebooted in 2016 to have a new style and continuity. In the original game, Ratchet is portrayed as a character with selfish goals, seeking excitement, and at times being blinded by vengeance but through his friendship with Clank, he learns to be a more compassionate person, willing to perform heroic acts, however, he still retains his adventurous nature. Ratchet is very much the opposite to his best-friend Clank, whom Ratchet explicitly makes fun of for being a "nerd." In the 2016 reboot, the series is aimed more towards younger children. Ratchet is still a mechanic, but is now written to be a self-appointed "nerd," removing the contrasting character traits between himself and Clank. His original character journey is exclusive to the original continuity. [Written by MemeticMaxfield]
