Sandman comes from a Native American tribe, yet had recently become ostracized for his embracing of the "white man's" culture. Despite this, he enters the Steel Ball Run race, hoping to use the prize money as a means of buying back his ancestor's land and protecting his tribe. Soon he establishes himself as one of the fiercest and unique competitors in the race, choosing to travel completely on foot.
