As a child, Nanao narrowly escaped death when his mother forced him to eat mermaid's flesh after an argument with her ex-husband, having eaten it herself as well. 17 years later, Nanao's mother appeared and kidnapped Nanao's son, appearing 8 years afterwards with the 10-year-old child whom she now called "Nanao" and claimed as her own son, whom she is forcing to take a small daily dose of a mermaid's flesh.
